How strong is an edible made with concentrate?
Distillate, RSO, rosin, hash or kief instead of flower. The arithmetic is different in two ways that matter, and the first question the page asks you is the one most guides skip.
Two things that are not true of flower
Almost nothing is lost. Infusing flower is an extraction: you are asking fat to pull cannabinoid out of plant material, and a fifth to a half of it stays behind. A concentrate has already been extracted, so the only loss left is mechanical — the film on the syringe, the spoon, the jar. That is why these numbers come out so much higher than the flower calculator gives, and why running distillate through that one under-reports it badly.
“Concentrate” does not mean “active”. Distillate and RSO are decarbed by their own production, because distillation and solvent purging both run hot. Rosin, shatter, live resin, hash, kief and THCA diamonds are not — they are extracted cold or purged gently, which is the point of them, and it leaves the cannabinoid as THCA. Eaten without decarbing, they do close to nothing. That is the single most common reason a concentrate edible fails, and it is the first question this page asks.
Questions people ask
- Do I need to decarb distillate?
- No. Distillation runs hot enough and long enough to decarboxylate the oil on the way through, so distillate is already active when you buy it — you can stir it straight into warm butter. RSO is the same, because it is made by cooking the solvent off. Heating either one again does not add potency; past the peak it starts converting THC to CBN, so it quietly costs you some.
- Do I need to decarb rosin, shatter or live resin?
- Yes, and this is the mistake that ruins more concentrate edibles than anything else. Those are all extracted cold or purged at low temperature, which removes solvent and preserves terpenes but does not decarboxylate anything. The material is still mostly THCA, which is not psychoactive. Spread it on parchment or in a small oven-safe dish and decarb it the same way you would flower — 240 °F for about 30 minutes — before it goes anywhere near the fat.
- What about THCA diamonds?
- Diamonds are the extreme case. They test at 95 to 99 percent, which makes them the strongest thing on the shelf, and essentially all of that is THCA. Eaten as they are, they do almost nothing. Decarbed first, a single gram is somewhere north of 800 mg of THC — enough for a hundred standard edibles, which is worth sitting with before you measure any out.
- My syringe says 900 mg, not a percentage. What do I enter?
- Switch the label format to "Total mg" and enter 900. That figure is the whole syringe, so if you are only using half of it, enter 450 instead. A 1 g syringe marked 900 mg is the same thing as 900 mg/g, which is the same thing as 90 percent — the calculator will take any of the three.
- Why is the estimate so much higher than the flower calculator gives?
- Because almost nothing is lost. When you infuse flower, most of the uncertainty is in extraction: you are asking fat to pull cannabinoid out of plant material, and somewhere between a fifth and a half of it stays behind in the spent flower or on the cheesecloth. There is no extraction step with a concentrate. It is already out. All you lose is what stays stuck to the syringe and the spoon, which is a few percent. Running distillate through a flower calculator will under-report it by roughly a third.
- Can I put concentrate straight into a recipe without infusing it?
- You can, but it will not distribute evenly, and uneven distribution is the whole safety problem with edibles. Concentrate is sticky and it does not dissolve in water, flour or sugar — it needs fat, warmth and stirring. Dissolve it into the recipe's butter or oil first, off the heat once the fat is warm, then carry on as normal. That way every serving gets the same share.
