If it has gone wrong

You took too much

It is unpleasant, it is frightening, and it passes. Here is what to do, in order.

Right now

  1. 01Sit or lie down somewhere quiet and familiar. Standing up and moving around makes dizziness and a racing heart worse.
  2. 02Drink some water. Dry mouth and mild dehydration make everything feel worse than it is.
  3. 03Tell someone you trust what is going on. Not managing it alone is the single thing that helps most. You do not have to explain it well.
  4. 04Do not take anything else. No more cannabis, no alcohol, nothing to counteract it. There is nothing that works and mixing makes it less predictable.
  5. 05Do not drive. Not now, and not in a couple of hours when you feel finished.
  6. 06Let time pass. Sleep if you can. Sleeping is not a cure, it just removes the part that is genuinely unpleasant, which is waiting.

Call for help if

  • There is chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or a seizure.
  • There is a heart condition, or the person is pregnant.
  • Alcohol or any other substance is involved.
  • The person cannot be woken, or does not know where they are.
  • It is a child — call emergency services or poison control now, do not wait and see.
  • A pet ate it — call a vet immediately. Dogs are far more sensitive than people.

Emergency services deal with this regularly and will not be shocked. Say what was eaten, roughly how much, and when. If you have the recipe or the label, keep it to hand.

What is actually happening

You have more THC in your bloodstream than you are comfortable with, and your body is processing it at its own pace. The usual presentation is anxiety or paranoia, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, and a distorted sense of how much time is passing. None of that is dangerous in a healthy adult, and all of it is genuinely horrible while it lasts.

There is no known lethal dose of THC for an adult. That is worth holding onto, and it is not the same as saying there is no risk — the real dangers around a large edible dose are falling, driving, choking while asleep on your back, and an existing heart condition. Lying on your side somewhere safe removes most of them.

How long you have to get through

The peak usually sits two to four hours after eating, the main effect runs four to eight, and there is a tail after that. If you are reading this an hour in, the honest answer is that the worst is probably still ahead of you — and that it will still be over by morning.

It will also come in waves rather than easing steadily, so a stretch that feels like it is lifting and then returns is normal and does not mean it is getting worse. The full timeline is on how long edibles last.

What does not work

  • Eating more food. It cannot absorb what is already in your bloodstream. Eating something plain is fine if you feel sick; it is not a remedy.
  • Coffee or energy drinks. You end up alert and anxious instead of sleepy and anxious, which is worse.
  • A cold shower. Bracing, briefly distracting, and does nothing to the drug.
  • Making yourself sick. If you are feeling it, it has already been absorbed. Vomiting adds choking and dehydration to the evening without helping.
  • Black pepper, lemon, CBD. All widely repeated, none well established. Harmless to try, so try them if it helps you feel less passive — but do not count on them, and do not take more cannabis of any kind.

Afterwards

You may feel slow and foggy into the next day, particularly after a large dose. That fades.

When you are ready to work out what went wrong, it is usually one of three things: the batch was stronger than you thought, it was not mixed evenly so one piece carried far more than its share, or you redosed inside the two-hour window and both arrived together. The infusion calculator will tell you what your butter or oil actually was, and the batch log will keep the answer on the jar so the next one is not a surprise.
